Political Instability in Kenya 16.01.2008

Kenya has been undergoing a period of instability since the latest elections.  Red Cross officials have tallied the nationwide death toll to at least 1000 with many more maimed and left homeless.

We have been in close contact with our friends in Nakuru and though a dozen houses were burnt down tension in Nakuru seems to have ceased.   The Piave Maternity Ward and HIV/AIDS Counseling Center is intact and the community of Piave is doing relatively well despite these trying times.

Nakuru is apparently serving many refugees from surrounding areas such as Eldoret and Molo.  The Red Cross has set up a camp near the provincial hospital and food shortage is not an issue thanks to the recent harvest and the generous donations of community members.  ROTH has made a monetary donation for the purchase of blankets, diapers, and sanitary napkins, which will be delivered to the refugees over the next couple of days.  Please check in again with us for more updates.
