John Reid finishes Half Ironman in support of ROTH Tanzania 09.07.2010

John Reid, a great friend of ROTH, completed the Peterborough Half Ironman on July 4th in support of our Tanzania initiative, the Maasai Women Secondary School.

A grueling competition, the Half Ironman course consists of a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bicycle ride and 21.1 km run. After months of training, which can only be described as grueling, John was ready for the race, completing the whole course in only 5h 1min 39sec, placing him 56th out of 451 competitors. The conditions in Peterborough on race day were particularly challenging, John reported, with a temperature of 36 degrees Celsius when accounting for humidity, and at least fifty people were unable to finish the course.

And it was all for ROTH! John collected sponsorship money to benefit the Maasai Women Secondary School, which is currently under construction in Arusha, Tanzania. John threw a fundraising party and set up his own Giving Page online. To date, he’s raised approximately $4,000 to help build the school. That’s 5.6 million Tanzanian shillings!

John’s original goal was to raise $5,000 for ROTH; with one grand to go, John says he will keep fundraising to meet his goal. ROTH is so proud of John’s amazing finish, and grateful for his extraordinary and ongoing support.

You can help John reach his goal by making a donation to ROTH through his Giving Page .

The race continues! Thank you John!
