We first met Upendo through her father Eliakim, our driver during our
Tanzania Project. Always kind, helpful and hard-working, Eliakim quickly
became simply “Baba” for many of the volunteers. After learning that
Eliakim’s daughter Upendo (which means “love” in Kiswahili) had been
accepted to teacher’s college but could not afford to pay the fees, one
volunteer from Seattle offered him the tuition fees for her first year.
Upendo, who is Maasai, has an excellent academic record, and is now
embarking on her dream to become a teacher, helping others in her
community realize their own potential. With the support of her loving
family, Upendo will be able to pay forward her own educational gains by
providing her own students with a first-rate education.
ROTH is proud to sponsor Upendo’s education. If you would like to
contribute to Upendo’s scholarship, please make a donation.
