While in Kenya, ROTH members visited various health care facilities
throughout the Rongai constituency and were taken aback by the outdated
and overcrowded public health centres and hospitals. Given the
prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the fact that only two-fifths of births are
attended by qualified health workers, ROTH came to the consensus that a
Maternity Ward and HIV/AIDS Counseling Centre would be its next
project. In an understanding with the Ministry of Health for the
Nakuru District, ROTH agreed to fundraise for the construction costs
and supervise the erection of the Piave Maternity Ward and
HIV/AIDS Counseling Centre. In turn, the Minister of Health has
agreed to staff, equip, maintain, and sustain the centre.
Thanks to the hard work of ROTH Volunteers as well as the help of generous donors from Canada, Ireland, England, and the United States ROTH officially opened the Piave Maternity Ward and Counseling Center on August 24, 2007. We welcomed our first baby born at the Maternity Ward on September 11, 2007. Please click on one of the links below to read about the construction process.
