Week 3: The Foundations Continue
26.09.2008
As with any construction project, there is always a necessary period of adaptation where one has to learn to work within the limitations of the group as a whole. Language being the most difficult aspect of coordinating this project, we're finally getting used to a system of broken spanish, simplified sentences, as well as acquiring a large repertoire of hand signals.
The site is now leveled with all columns for the exterior walls in place and secured into the foundations. Volunteers were hard at work this week helping the 'maestros' or tradesmen, tie the wiring around the columns, level the ground, carry rocks, and pour the foundations. We decided that with a few small changes to the plans, we could afford to include a community kitchen, pharmacy, and women's workshop for the community of Hijos de Luya.
