Volunteers are hard at work sanding, priming, re-sanding and painting
the walls. We also had a good time painting (two coats) the 75 roof
panels that will eventually make up the ceiling of Blocks 1 and 3.
After many rows concerning the much debated ‘seafoam’ accent wall in
one of the classrooms we finally reached a compromise that each of the
three classrooms would be identifiable by different functions as well
as their individual colour schemes.
Though we are down two soldiers due to various ailments, the rest of
the volunteers pitched in to complete the floors early Saturday
morning, mixing concrete well into the afternoon. We did however pick up another voluteer as Kike kindly offered to lend us a hand. He is our third
official Peruvian volunteer and we were lucky to have him help us mix
some concrete early Wednesday morning before he had to jet off to work
as a ‘kombi’ driver.
We also had a birthday this week that was celebrated in true Peruvian fashion! Margo received an egg over her head which traditionally is followed by flour, sugar, and other cake-like ingredients. In order to prevent an even more embarassing bus ride home, we just stuck with the one egg.
It is once again becoming apparent how many ‘last minute’ things must be sought out when a project nears completion. From towel racks to doorbells, there seems to be an endless list of odds and ends that seems to be amounting in front of us. The next couple of weeks are going to have to be 7-day weeks but if we all pull together we are pretty confident that we can get this done.
