Maasai girls aren’t the only ones who will get an education from the school; the volunteers and organizers of ROTH learn a lot too. This week, it was the anatomy of a roof; first the gables went up (the peaks of stone that support the roof), then the rafters width-ways across the classrooms, then the trusses lengthways. After some delays relating to the availability of supplies in Arusha, part of the aluminum roof sheeting (in stylish green) were delivered while we await the rest.

Meanwhile, the exterior plastering on the classrooms was finished this week, and our Irish volunteer contingency dug the soak pit, which takes in all the waste-water from the showers and sinks so as not to interrupt the anaerobic process (ie decomposition) of the septic tank with detergents and soap. The wiring has also progressed under the supervision of our electricians William, a volunteer from Ireland, and Stanley, from Arusha. There are now sockets in all the classrooms, as well as door frames for every room in both the classroom and dormitory buildings.

Back at the ROTH house, the volunteers celebrated the birthdays of Frédérique and Annie with a backyard BBQ. The Irish lads cleaned up the whole backyard, even fashioning a BBQ out of rocks and a broken wheelbarrow! We invited a few neighbours, our staff and the people at MWEDO, and enjoyed an evening of great food from here and abroad around the fire-pit.
